Vacation for a change - an anti-Bush appeal

A letter from Bill Dingfelder, USA

Dear JUST Response,

Re: Impeach George W. Bush now (JUST Response, May 18 2004)

At a time when many people are planning a vacation, as one ordinary citizen I am urging other Americans to take a “Vacation for a Change”.  And that change is to help John Kerry, and other progressive candidates, get elected.

I am urging people throughout the country to use at least one week of their vacation time to get John Kerry, and other progressive candidates, elected this fall. All you need to do is spend five of your vacation days, plus a weekend, from October 1st through Election Day, and work for candidates that are trying to make important changes in our country.  This can involve distributing campaign literature, talking to your neighbors and friends at their homes, putting up campaign signs, working the telephones, or staffing the polls on Election Day.

I am a freelance grantwriter based in the Philadelphia suburbs and am not affiliated with the Kerry campaign or any other political effort. I am just an ordinary person who was getting frustrated with the direction the country is going.  I don’t have a lot of money to donate to political campaigns, but, like others, I do have vacation time.  This fall, I’m using that time to help get progressive candidates elected, and I thought I’d urge others to do the same.  So I came up with the ‘Vacation for a Change’ concept.”

But why should people give up their hard-earned vacation time?  There are several reasons.

First, it’s not giving up time – it’s using your time in a better way.  Secondly, it’s a way to translate your ideals into action.  Third, it’s a great way to reconnect with your friends, your neighbors, and your community.  And fourth, you’ll feel good about yourself. Instead of just a tan, you’ll have something a lot more meaningful to show for your vacation.”

Do not contact me, but instead to contact Kerry’s campaign headquarters, local offices, or the headquarters of any other progressive candidates, from Congress on down to the local level.  There are many opportunities to get involved, and this fall is when your time can matter the most.

But can’t Republicans and conservatives use the “Vacation for a Change” concept, too?

Republicans already hold the Presidency, most of Congress, and many local offices as well. If you campaign for Republicans, you are not really working for change, are you?  You are working for more of the same.

So, if you’re not in favor of progressive candidates, feel free to use your vacation time like you usually do!
